Course Overview
Point-of-care ultrasound has become an indispensable bedside tool in the care of acutely ill patients as portable ultrasound machines have become more compact and available in hospitals. As frontline providers, hospitalists are using point-of-care ultrasound to guide diagnostic work ups and perform invasive bedside procedures on their patients. This pre-course combines high-yield didactic sessions with hands-on training to teach the fundamentals of how to evaluate patients with point-of-care ultrasound. The pre-course starts with a review of the basics of ultrasound technology and then dives into the myriad of diagnostic ultrasound applications: focused cardiac ultrasound; evaluation of pleural effusions, pneumothorax, and ascites; evaluation for lower extremity deep venous thrombosis; and evaluation of abdominal organs. Participants experience low participant-to-faculty ratios in an interactive atmosphere that is highly conducive to learning. Imaging techniques are practiced on live models with experienced faculty teaching participants. This pre-course employs cutting-edge equipment and is led by expert faculty gathered from across the country.
Learning Objectives
- Appreciate the fundamental principles of ultrasound technology and basic operation of a portable ultrasound machine.
- Recognize the different types of ultrasound transducers and their utility in various point-of-care ultrasound applications.
- Demonstrate the proper techniques to perform focused cardiac, lung, abdominal, and lower extremity vascular ultrasound examinations.
- Appreciate the normal sonographic appearance of the heart, lungs, abdominal organs, and lower extremity vasculature and practice interpreting abnormal ultrasound images with gross pathologies
