Course Overview

Hospitalists are occasionally asked to perform emergent procedures. Of those, endotracheal intubation and initial ventilator management are frequently requested. This half-day session will begin with recognizing respiratory distress, progress through the use of non-invasive ventilation and supraglottic airway devices, address emergent endotracheal intubation without rapid sequence induction, and conclude with reviewing some of the basics of ventilator management.

Learning Objectives

  • Distinguish the different interventions to address respiratory distress;
  • Determine which are most useful relevant to a particular situation; and
  • Demonstrate the skills needed to employ each of the airway adjuncts discussed.
