Hospital Medicine 2018 offers excellent opportunities for academic hospitalists and researchers to expand their knowledge, skills and professional network. In addition to academic breakout tracks packed with practical information, academic hospitalists should be aware of these special events.
Academic Hospital Medicine Leadership Summit
Sunday, April 8, 2018, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Attend the Academic Hospital Medicine Leadership Summit to network and exchange ideas with colleagues in academic medicine relative to practice, career development and advocacy. The agenda is usually built around a theme, with presentations from leaders in the field.
Registration is required. The cost of attending the Summit is $150.

Academic and Research Special Interest Forum
Monday, April 9th, 2018, 4:30 – 5:25 p.m.
SHM’s Academic and Research Committees will facilitate collaborative discussions on research and quality improvement projects throughout the Academic Hospital Medicine Community. The forum will highlight projects that are seeking collaborators. Participants will have the opportunity to meet fellow hospitalists who share similar interests in scholarly inquiry and make connections that will help foster mutually beneficial work.
This forum is targeted to academic or community hospitalists who:
- Have a local QI or research project that would benefit from expanding its scope to other sites
- Are seeking assistance in expanding their network to facilitate scholarly collaboration
- Are interested in joining an established project

Early-career Academic Hospitalist Speed-mentoring Session
Monday, April 9, 2018, 12:00-1:00 pm
Early-career academic hospitalists who enroll in this activity will receive personalized mentorship from up to three senior faculty members during this special session. The first 20 participants will be accepted.
Although there is no additional fee, preregistration is required.

Academic/Research Educational Track
Participate in this combined track designated for hospitalists who practice in academic medical centers and face unique challenges, as well as for hospitalists in any setting interested in research. Just a few topics being addressed include How to Write a Winning Abstract, How to Engage Leadership to Ensure Success and Convert Your Everyday Work into Scholarship. Also featured are oral presentations selected from the RIV abstracts receiving the top scores by reviewers. Every hospitalist, whether in a community or academic medical setting, who desires to bring greater rigor to their analysis as well as educational effectiveness will walk away from these sessions with new resources to implement.
Research, Innovations and Clinical Vignettes – Scientific Abstract and Poster Competition
Attend the Society of Hospital Medicine’s Scientific Abstract and Poster Competition, known as Research, Innovations and Clinical Vignettes (RIV), one of the most popular events at SHM’s Annual Meeting. Here you can discuss emerging science and clinical cases, share feedback and make valuable professional connections. Many of the cutting-edge abstracts that are first presented at SHM’s RIV sessions go on to be published in respected medical journals.
The competition features more than 1,700 applicants vying for approximately 900 poster spots. Plenary and oral sessions are chosen from the pool of abstracts prior to the meeting, and their authors are invited to present on-site at HM18.
